This might have been my favorite project this year! I really enjoyed the process of magazine-making, especially because I've been wanting to do it for a while. Ever since I learned about street-wear and the underground house music of the 80s and 90s in Detroit, I've wanted to participate in some of the graphic design aspects of it. A lot of the underground scene moved on "good taste" and niche design, so I felt appropriately challenged to find my pocket in that process.
Blurb was not that difficult. Though, the app definitely has a bit of a learning curve, not too big, but there is a bit of jolt, it was easy to navigate through it, and it was decently easy to place and align my images too. I found myself playing with different text sizes and positions since I had decided to keep the same font for the entire magazine. Overall, blurb was just an awesome and fun place to explore.
For the exhibition, I loved it! I have never been in an exhibition where I was truly proud of the work I did, but for this one, I felt confident about the work that I had ready. The printmaking process was not too difficult. I ran into about 3 problems, which were all fixed by reading the guide that was left on the table. The colors were the toughest I think. I had to reprint both of them a few times, and I kept reverting and re-editing the pictures until I got the ones up on the exhibition. It was fun. I have a few throw away prints that I plan to just mess around with and cut up and paste on my sketchbook. That being said, I feel like the prints I chose are pretty nice.
The process for the show was also very fun. I really appreciate that I got to see everyone in action, working together to get everything ready. It felt like a collective and honest effort from most of us. Overall, I'm excited to possibly put up some of my friends shows in the future. I have a couple of friends who make amazing art, and through this assignment, I feel like I've learned at least the basics of an exhibition, what's to be expected, etc.
This entire project was very challenging, but it was also extremely fun for me. I'm very excited to keep working with all of the tools that were shown to me, and I'm also very very excited to use the tools that I was taught.
